In recent years, many stars and top athletes have included lemon juice in their morning routine. The reason? Its supposedly detoxifying properties for the body, thanks in particular to its antioxidant power. But does this drink really have an effect on our health? At the risk of surprising you, the answer is yes. It is even advisable to drink (organic) lemon every day in a little lukewarm water (water that is too hot or too cold will kill the vitamins it contains). And if lemon is good for our health, it’s because it has so many benefits!
The recipe to know: squeeze a fresh lemon (manually or with a juice extractor). Mix a teaspoon of powdered sugar in a glass of cold, still, or sparkling water. Then pour in the lemon juice (preferably with lemon zest). Mix everything. You get a good, completely homemade and very refreshing lemonade!
As a bonus: if you are more into the infusion, squeeze half a lemon and boil 40 cl of water. Add one to two teaspoons of ginger (powdered or fresh and grated) to the boiling water. Pour in the lemon juice. Cover and let steep for about ten minutes. If necessary, add a little honey. Then, drink this hot lemonade or put it in the fridge, whatever you want!
1. A drink rich in vitamins
The good thing about lemon (which, let’s remember, is a citrus fruit) is that it contains many vitamins, especially vitamin C. It is also rich in B vitamins, fibre, iron, copper, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and magnesium. In addition, it is relatively low in carbohydrates. Lemon juice in the morning, preferably on an empty stomach, is, therefore, the ideal remedy to stimulate and boost the immune system. Plus, it’s a great way to get you going for the day!
Note that you can also replace lemon with lime, which has the same properties and is also part of the citrus family.
2. Lemon juice hydrates you
Drinking lemon juice as soon as you wake up hydrates the body, especially the skin. Rich in antioxidants thanks to the flavonoids it contains, lemon juice helps fight free radicals. And therefore to slow down the aging of the skin. In addition, it would also act on acne. Notice to all those looking to have a fresh complexion in the morning!
3. A drink that prevents snacking
At the risk of disappointing you, drinking lemon water on an empty stomach every morning will not make you lose weight. And for good reason, it does not replace a balanced diet. On the other hand, it can help you not to succumb to small cravings during the morning.
As our stomachs are acidic themselves, it generally tolerates the acidity of lemon well, which helps in better absorption of nutrients. If you have difficult digestion, lemon juice can help fight indigestion, bloating or even heartburn. A real ally of our digestive system!
Note that lemon essential oil can also be used to treat digestive problems. It facilitates transit and relieves nausea. But be careful to dilute it!
5. A detox drink
Drinking squeezed lemon juice has a diuretic effect on the body: the more you drink, the more you urinate, thereby helping the body to flush out toxins. A lemon cure could even help fight kidney stones. A real detox drink, in short.
6. A cleansing drink
Thanks to its antibacterial properties, lemon juice helps to cleanse the mouth deeply and to have fresher breath. And as a bonus, it has the effect of whitening the teeth!
But be careful, even if lemons have a sour taste, they do not kill germs! In addition, thanks to the potassium they contain, lemon is one of the alkalizing foods and not acidifying ones. As for its acidic flavour, it owes it to the citric acid it contains.
